Homemade Play Dough

We just made the best play dough ever using an adaptation of the following recipe:

I used:

  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp lemon juice made up to 1 cup with warm water
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 oz Strawberry Banana Jello

The pack of Jello that I found in the store cupboard was a 6 oz pack, so I used the first 3 oz to make some of the wibbly wobbly stuff as an afternoon snack (or dessert).

I didn’t have any cream of tartar, so substituted for twice the quantity of lemon juice (vinegar would work, but would smell considerably worse). The recipe called for 2 tbsp cream of tartar.

I didn’t want to add unnecessary moisture to the dough, so put  4 tbsp lemon juice into a cup, and made up to 1 cup with warm water.

I heat this over the stove, on medium heat and kept stirring. It soon got very difficult to mix. My arms, back and shoulders got a good work out!

I let the dough cool on a floured surface then kneaded it, with a little extra flour.

The kids have loved playing with it.

I will see how long it lasts in an airtight container in the fridge.
